The Album Era — How It Began and How It Faded
The album is a child of a medium — and the child has grown up

"The album" feels like a natural unit of music — a dozen songs bundled together. It actually has a birth certificate: around 1948, the LP stretched a side past twenty minutes, and the dozen songs finally had a physical container.
Birth: one disc could hold one artist
Before the LP, a record side held three minutes; the unit of release was the single. After it, an artist could compose across forty minutes: an opening that sets the key, a middle that climbs, an ending that looks back — the album became "a complete statement". From the 1960s to the 1990s, it was the industry's most valuable unit: concept albums, cover art and review culture all orbited it.
Deconstruction: downloads and streaming broke it back into singles
In the 2000s, downloads let listeners buy one song; then streaming made the playlist the new organising unit. The unit of listening fell from "album" back to "track" — and further: from track to chorus.
The last thirty years in one line: the album was once the unit of work; now it is one release format among many.
What survives
Curiously, the album is not dead — it has retreated to "the formal statement": major works are still discussed, archived and awarded as albums. What changed is the audience's main path: most people meet you first through a playlist; only a minority sit down for the full forty minutes.
What it means for makers
- Make an album: complete, durable, reviewable — but it asks forty minutes of attention;
- Make singles: light, fast, algorithm-friendly — but easy to be swept into "next".
Neither is right or wrong; they are contracts with different listeners. Knowing which contract you are signing is the important part.
Listen: the same chords, a different "track order"
Album thinking is ordering. Resequence the same chords and the character changes — like a setlist rearranged.
