Terms of Use
Conditions of use and conduct for this site
1. What this is
This site (midicn.com and its subdomains — lib / mid / zip / hist / comp / theo / inst / gen / prod / cn) is a free, non-commercial music knowledge site maintained by an individual. Our goal: explain what music is, how it is built, and how it is made, as clearly as we can.
There are no accounts, no payments, and no transactions here.
2. How you may use it
Text and hand-drawn diagrams on this site are licensed under CC BY 4.0. That means:
- ✅ Copy, republish, adapt, translate freely — including for commercial purposes
- ✅ Put it on pages with advertising, or in your own materials
- ⚠️ The one requirement is attribution: credit this site and link back
Code on this site is MIT licensed.
Musical works referenced here (MIDI files) are *not* covered by the above. Each belongs to its own source licence within the midicn-lib dataset, and every example on every page carries its licence tier (C1 commercial / C2 non-commercial / C3 study only). For those, their own licence governs.
3. Please don't
- ❌ Scrape at high frequency. Bandwidth is limited, and the content is open anyway — there is no need
- ❌ Republish without attribution, or claim the content as your own
- ❌ Use the content in ways that violate the law where you are
- ❌ Treat it as professional teaching, legal or medical advice (see the Disclaimer)
4. Accuracy
We check facts carefully and list sources at the end of each entry. That said:
- This is general explanatory material and comes with no warranty of accuracy
- Some questions in music history and musicology are genuinely disputed; where they are, we say so
- If you find an error, tell us (below)
5. Changes to these terms
These terms may be updated as the site develops (for example, if advertising or new features are introduced). A revised version will replace this page, and continued use constitutes acceptance. Significant changes will be dated here.
6. Contact
For errors, copyright concerns, or licensing enquiries, open an issue on our GitHub repository or contact the maintainer.
This page is a plain-language summary, not legal advice. For a specific claim, consult a qualified professional.
