Copyright & Takedown
How this site's content is licensed, and how to submit a takedown notice
1. Licensing of this site's content
| Content | Licence | You may |
|---|---|---|
| Text (entries, explanations, glossary) | CC BY 4.0 | Copy, adapt, translate, use commercially, place on ad-supported pages — attribution only |
| Hand-drawn diagrams (SVG figures, trees, staff examples, range charts) | CC BY 4.0 | Same as above |
| Site code | MIT | Use freely, keep the licence notice |
| Referenced tracks (MIDI) | Their own source licence (below) | Follow the tier shown on each page |
Suggested attribution:
Source: midicn (https://midicn.com/), licensed CC BY 4.0
2. Why such a permissive licence is possible
Because the content is clean at the source:
- Text is 100% original — sources are used to verify facts, never for phrasing (no Wikipedia text, whose CC BY-SA is viral)
- All diagrams are hand-drawn SVG — no stock art, textbook figures or scanned scores
- No photographic images — instruments and scenes are vector illustrations
- Audio is synthesised live in the browser — not a copy of any recording
- No external CDNs (fonts, icons and scripts are all self-hosted)
That is why this site *can* grant CC BY 4.0 rather than reserving all rights.
3. Referenced tracks (MIDI)
Every playable example comes from the midicn-lib dataset with its licence tier stated on the page:
| Tier | Meaning | Typical sources |
|---|---|---|
| C1 | Commercial use permitted | Public domain, CC0, CC BY, CC BY-SA, OPEN |
| C2 | Non-commercial | CC BY-NC-SA (e.g. the aria classical piano set) |
| C3 | Study and research only | Traditional music transcriptions (incl. Chinese folk songs) |
This site does not alter those licences and claims no rights over those tracks. To confirm what you may do with a track, the midicn-lib ledger is the final authority.
4. Third-party marks and names
Instrument brands, software names, labels and institutions mentioned here remain the property of their owners. They appear for factual reference only — no affiliation, sponsorship or endorsement is implied.
5. If your rights are affected
We will act promptly on any reasonable claim. If you hold rights in material used here and believe our use exceeds what is permitted, please provide:
1. The specific page URL 2. The work you claim, and the nature of your rights in it 3. How to reach you 4. A short explanation of why you believe the use is unauthorised
Submit via an issue on our GitHub repository (if privacy matters, leave contact details only and we will follow up privately).
Our commitments:
- On a valid notice, we take it down first and verify after — disputed material does not stay online
- If the claim turns out to be mistaken, we explain why and restore it
- We will not ask for more information than necessary
6. What we do proactively
- At the dataset level, midicn-lib keeps per-source licence records and removal logs (including a documented review that removed 521 possibly in-copyright works from one source)
- At the content level, every entry lists its sources so facts can be traced
- If advertising or other commercialisation is introduced, we will re-assess the licence-tier risk of the tracks we reference
This page is a plain-language summary, not legal advice.
