You Write or Arrange
You finish songs, but mixing and delivery wobble — fill in the production chain and standards
What you can probably do now
You finish songs or arrangements, you have a set of harmonic moves you trust, and the track count keeps growing. It sounds acceptable on a phone and falls apart in a car or on headphones.
The one thing to fix
Mixing judgement: hear the four symptoms — mud, harshness, flatness, hollowness — before deciding which plug-in to touch. When judgement is unsure, more tools make it worse. Take one of your own tracks and find a concrete example of each symptom.
Three pages to start
- Introduction to mixing — settle what mixing is for before discussing technique.
- Hearing common mistakes — four symptoms, four kinds of move; you can self-check after one listen.
- The reference track method — a finished record replaces "does it feel right today".
Do not touch yet
The mastering chain and multiband compression, film scoring workflow, AI licensing contracts. The first two wait until the mix is stable; the third until you actually use generated material.
How you know you have moved up
- The same mix shows the same problems on three different systems.
- Against a reference you can name three concrete differences in your own track.
- A delivery passes platform or client requirements first time, with no rework.
