Music with Kids at Home — Where to Start
The goal is to wire music to joy — not to learn early
Related
The easiest way to get music education wrong is to treat it as "learning early". The real goal is different: wire music together with fun, safety and company. That connection lasts a lifetime.
Three stages, three jobs
- Ages 0–3: environment and response. Play music in the background (all styles); answer the sounds your child makes — they tap once, you tap twice. That is the earliest "ensemble".
- Ages 3–6: games and singing. Rhythm games (clapping, walking, copying), singing, giving stories sound effects. This stage needs play, not lessons.
- After six: instruments can enter. The key is letting the child take part in choosing — an instrument they chose is one they will keep. Give the trial at least half a year.
The parent "cannot do music" problem
- You do not need to. Listening, singing and clapping together is enough. What the child remembers is "we did this together", not your tuning.
- Let recordings demonstrate. When a cleaner model is needed, play a recording — that is division of labour, not laziness.
- Do not become the inspector. "Have you practised yet?" burns interest faster than any technical problem.
Three "do nots"
1. Do not start early for its own sake: exam races before school age are often paid for with ten years of resistance afterwards; 2. Do not make the child a stage prop: performing for face teaches the child to link music with nerves; 3. Do not compare with other children: there is no universal timetable in music — only your child's own pace.
Listen: up and down
One of the first musical ideas a child can grasp — high and low. Listen together, and let fingers climb and descend with the sound.

- Looking for a "first instrument": the recorder and the ukulele are friendly options.
- How rhythm games work: Rhythm Training.
- When the child is older, look up the "children's albums" written by real composers — a lasting tradition.
