Starting Guitar — Which One First?
Sort out the three siblings first — steel, nylon, electric — then pick
Related
The guitar has three siblings that look alike and differ widely in use. Meet the family before reaching for your wallet.
The three jobs
- Steel-string acoustic: the singer's companion. Chords come quickly, pop songs are everywhere. The cost is a tougher set of strings and a longer callus phase.
- Classical (nylon): solo playing and systematic study. Nylon is kind to fingers, and there is a complete, mature method — the more formal doorway if you want to "properly learn an instrument", not just strum.
- Electric: bands and tone. Needs an amp or a headphone plan; strings are soft and easy, but tone study is a whole second subject.
Which one? Whatever the job is — sing-along takes the acoustic, solo and method take the classical, band life takes the electric.
Three standards for the first guitar
1. Feel first: press an F chord. If it is so hard that "fingers will snap", change the guitar — not yourself. 2. Intonation second: ask the shop to tune it, then play at the 12th fret — harmonic and fingered note should match. 3. Do not buy a "practice guitar": high action and drifting intonation disguise "hard" as "you are not cut out for it".
About the pain: the truth of month one
Calluses are part of the road, but pain that stops you pressing usually means the guitar or the method is off (action too high, pressing too far back, sessions too long). Try:
- Short and often: two fifteen-minute sessions beat one forty-minute grind;
- Press by the fret: just behind the metal fret wire halves the effort;
- Listen for the clean "click": a sounding, buzz-free note means you pressed right.
Listen: one chord is enough
The guitar's logic is chords first — one C major triad and you can accompany hundreds of choruses. Hear it first.

- The formal doorway: Classical Guitar.
- The sing-along workhorse: Acoustic Guitar.
- Smaller hands or lighter bags: the ukulele is the family's little sibling.
- Why chords come first: Chords.
