Choosing Online Music Resources
Three sieves — verifiable source, complete structure, built to last
Related
Online music resources reach choice paralysis: video tutorials, score libraries, Q&A communities, open courses, datasets. The problem was never scarcity — it is judging, in thirty seconds, whether a resource deserves your investment.
Three sieves
1. Verifiable source: does it dare to say what it is based on? Which edition of the score? A second source for the claim? The vaguer it sounds, the more you should worry. 2. Complete structure: is it pearls, or a necklace? Scattered tips rescue emergencies; systematic learning needs a system — read the table of contents first. 3. Built to last: downloadable, printable, citable, offline-readable — worth far more than anything locked inside a platform. A blunt but accurate test — will it still exist in five years?
How to use each kind
| Resource | Good at | Bad at |
|---|---|---|
| Video tutorials | demonstrating, play-along | being systematic (you assemble it) |
| Score libraries | finding a specific piece | telling you what to learn first |
| Q&A communities | fixing specific problems | systematic study |
| Open courses | building frameworks | answering *your* case |
| Data and archives | research, provenance | hand-holding |
A self-check for this site
You can bring the same three sieves to this website and the knowledge matrix behind it:
- Verifiable source: every entry lists its sources; every track example shows provenance and licence tier via "details";
- Complete structure: starter guides, theory, instruments, history, composers — separate sites woven into one net;
- Built to last: text is CC BY 4.0 — copy it, adapt it, republish with attribution.
We hold ourselves to the same standards — which is how we hope you pick everything.
Listen: a sentence to recognise by ear
Music has its structures too — the "ii–V–I" ending, the most common full stop in harmony. Recognising it means you are already listening for structure — the same skill you use to sift knowledge.
