Choosing a Practice App
Three standards — works offline, gives feedback, stays out of the way
Related
Practice tools — metronome, tuner, ear-training, play-along — raise practice efficiency sharply. Chosen badly, they waste it just as sharply: more features, more pop-ups, less focus.
Three filters
1. Works offline: nothing breaks a session like notifications, loading screens or logins. Offline is the floor. 2. Gives feedback: good tools tell you right/wrong, fast/slow, high/low — not just encouragement points. Clearer feedback, faster progress. 3. Stays out of the way: open it and the function is there — no three-screen ads, no membership prompts. Practice windows are already short.
How to use the four kinds
| Tool | Right use | Common misuse |
|---|---|---|
| Metronome | build steadiness slowly (see "Why Practise Slowly") | opening it only when things fall apart |
| Tuner | calibrating, checking intonation | staring at the numbers all session |
| Ear training | five minutes daily, steady as water | one weekend hour of cramming |
| Play-along / slow-down | copy at reduced speed, then step back up | living at half speed forever |
Two things tools cannot replace
- A teacher's diagnosis: a tool tells you "this note is flat"; only a person tells you "because your wrist is tense";
- Your own attention: when the tool says "correct", still ask — can I hear why it is correct? Tools are crutches; the goal is walking.
A footnote from history
Two centuries ago, the "practice app" was a printed book of easy pieces compiled for beginners — an evergreen genre in publishing ever since. The containers change; content designed for practice never does.
Listen: an everyday metronome setting
Around eighty is a comfortable starting point for much practice material. Let every beat sit still first.
