I Know Nothing — Where Do I Start?
Three routes — pick the one matching what you care about most, not all three
"I want to learn music but do not know where to start" — this page gives you three routes. Pick one; do not read all three.
What you are trying to do here
Answer one question first: what is actually blocking you? The three routes match three different blockers.
Where to read: three routes
Route A: decide whether and what to learn
Take this if you have not even chosen an instrument.
- Starting from zero: the first step — set a direction first
- Is it too late as an adult? — real advantages and real obstacles
- "Do I have talent?": a misframed question — why this question has no answer
- Theory first, or instrument first? — they are not a queue
This route lives entirely in the midicn home site: thirty short pieces, one question each.
Route B: you have chosen an instrument but not how to practise
Take this if you have picked an instrument but do not know how to practise.
- How long should I practise each day? — frequency beats duration
- Theory first, or instrument first? — the two can run in parallel
- Tool: metre: why 3/4 and 4/4 sound different — clickable
- Offsite: the instrument guide — understand how your instrument makes sound first
Route C: you want to understand what music is
Take this if you would rather understand than start playing.
- The music industry map: where the money is — see how music is organised
- Why the major scale sounds happy: explanation and dispute — start from the simplest phenomenon
- Offsite: music theory — over 150 theory entries
What is not built yet
Honestly, two gaps on this path:
1. The glossary is short of its plan — it should be the place where any term is one click away, and it is still a skeleton 2. There is no complete "zero to playing a piece" roadmap — the thirty guides cover judgement and mindset, but they do not cover the technical training track
The second point is a genuine gap. For now you have to assemble the guides and the instrument site yourself.
